It is a great pleasure to invite you to a presentation by Prof. Ricardo Baeza-Yates with the title “Responsible AI” (for the abstract, please see below). The presentation will take place on Friday, April26, 3pm (s.t.!) in the large lecture hall (Hörsaal) in the Mathematikon. Prof. Baeza-Yates is a renowned expert in Information Retrieval, Web search and mining, and responsible AI.

Abstract: In the first part, to set the stage, we cover irresponsible AI: (1) discrimination (e.g., facial recognition, justice); (2) pseudoscience (e.g., biometric based predictions); (3) limitations (e.g., human incompetence, minimal adversarial AI), (4) indiscriminate use of computing resources (e.g., large language models) and (5) the impact of generative AI (disinformation, mental health and copyright issues). These examples do have a personal bias but set the context for the second part where we address three challenges: (1) principles & governance, (2) regulation and (3) our cognitive biases. We finish discussing our responsible AI initiatives and the near future.
Bio: Ricardo Baeza-Yates is Director of Research at the Institute for Experiential AI of Northeastern University, as well as part-time professor at the Dept. of Computer Science of University of Chile. Before, he was VP of Research at Yahoo Labs, based in Barcelona, Spain, and later in Sunnyvale, California, from 2006 to 2016. He is co-author of the best-seller Modern Information Retrieval textbook published by Addison-Wesley in 1999 and 2011 (2nd ed), that won the ASIST 2012 Book of the Year award. From 2002 to 2004 he was elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society and between 2012 and 2016 was elected for the ACM Council. In 2009 he was named ACM Fellow and in 2011 IEEE Fellow, among other awards and distinctions. He obtained a Ph.D. in CS from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and his areas of expertise are responsible AI, web search and data mining plus data science and algorithms in general.
A team of students from Heidelberg University, aka HeiTwin (Dennis Jakob, Nikita-Nick Funk, Thomas Möller, Ernestine Großmann), has achieved remarkable success in the PACE Challenge! They secured the 5th place in the heuristic track (overall ranking) and an impressive 2nd place in the student ranking of the exact track of the challenge. The PACE Challenge is an international programming contest that focuses on solving graph-related problems using innovative algorithmic techniques, most often using data reduction techniques. This year, the challenge revolved around "twin width" a concept in graph theory that measures how well a graph can be partitioned into pairs of vertices with identical adjacent neighborhoods.
Team Heidelberg's unwavering dedication propelled them to excel in both tracks of the competition. Their outstanding performance demonstrates their deep understanding of graph theory and their algorithmic skills. Let's congratulate Team Heidelberg (HeiTwin) for their outstanding achievements in the PACE Challenge. We believe their success showcases their skills and the level of innovation within our faculty.

Satya Almasian, Milena Bruseva and Marina Walther impressed with their contribution "ShoppingBud" at the HerHackathon 2022 and took first place in the cross-Challenge final round.
From June 23, 2022 to June 26, 2022, this year's HerHackathon took place as an online competition. The event offered more than 350 selected international participants the chance to solve one of the seven challenges set by seven leading companies in Germany. The teams were to create a creative and innovative IT solution for the respective challenge within 72 hours. The Heidelberg team consisting of Satya Almasian, Milena Bruseva and Marina Walther impressed with their contribution "ShoppingBud" to the Schwarz IT challenge and took first place in the cross-challenge final round. Congratulations to the Heidelberg team!

On May 2nd, the final round of the 17th student competition in computer science of the society for computer science took place in Hamburg. Three teams had qualified from 30 submissions for the final. The HeiSpeed team from Heidelberg University, with students Julian Freyberg, Jonas Wildberger, Marina Walther and Holger Wunsch, presented the best solution as the winner of the event, which was streamed live on YouTube.
